Ari Prasetya is an Australian designer based in Copenhagen Denmark known for his work in furniture design, artistic functional objects, interior and spacial design. His design approach is characterized by a strict attention to detail and a strong conceptual focus. He creates objects and spaces that exist at the intersection of functionality and sculptural aesthetics and forms, often challenging conventional commercial design standards. With a philosophy of ‘expression through play’, he refuses to be constrained by a single discipline or defined way of working as he believes it feels to restricted to be confined within the common, rather its important that ones’ expression comes from the initiation of curious play.
Within his design practice, Ari approaches his work through an analogue process, allowing him to explore first hand with the intension to understand things in their complete process. Furniture prototypes are built 1:1 with the materials for the intended use. Often the minor changes will then be adjusted and translated digitally completing the final design.
His distinctive design interest is to explore his own mind to sense a unique interpretation of proportion that intuitively emerges through visual imagination and the handmade process. He is drawn to everyday objects, functional disappearance, or in other words the ‘un-noticed’ things that still have purpose within our everyday and surroundings.
Influenced by the existence of space itself and sensory feelings, shape and material play is an immense part with his intention to achieve design that provoke a feeling laying deeper. In addition, his work remains simple in layout, shape, surface and physical elements that reveal the final silhouette.
